5 Things a Legal Nurse Consultant Does

December 20, 2011

Did you know that the practice of legal nurse consulting can be big business?  Lawyers often need medical advice but can’t afford to pay doctors and other medical experts.  Enter the legal nurse consultant.  To get a better understanding of what they do, check out these five job duties of a legal nurse consultant.  Although it is not all they do, it is a good snapshot of what they can be asked to do.

  1. Educating attorneys – Because an attorney’s background and experience is in the law, they are just as confused about the medical arena as any laymen.  One of the main job duties of a legal nurse consultant is to educate attorneys on the meaning of diagnosis, medical exam results, and more.
  2. Write reports – Another thing commonly asked of legal nurse consultants is to go over a case, stack of articles, legal decisions, and others then write a report summarizing them and explaining the medical aspects in everyday language.
  3. Evaluate medical documentation – Did you know there is a right way and wrong way to fill out and file medical records?  Most people don’t, but legal nurse consultants do.  They will often look over medical records entered as evidence to find flaws, incorrect documentation, and other discrepancies the attorney can use.
  4. Transcription – If just starting out as a legal nurse consultant, this can be one of your most common duties.  Transcription involves taking down all the medical information and transcribing it into text, audio, or other format for attorneys.
  5. Testify – If you are a certified legal nurse consultant or have an impressive background in it, you may be called to testify as a medical expert during trial.  This can mean being questioned by the attorneys on your side as well as undergoing cross examination from the other side.
